I took these pictures in the first 72 hours of a vacation. In the year and a half before that, my thoughts had been more vivid and urgent than the world around me. It was time for fresh and instant looking. ¶ The pictures show this threshold between my old and new, a platform between two trains going in opposite directions. East and west. Past and future. Constant and fleeting. ¶ At the same time, the forms I saw in this faraway landscape inevitably echoed the forms I always see: the world as city; nature as a park; parks as places of community. Everywhere I find the light beyond the dark, the proud ways individuals – as architects, as graffiti artists, as café-goers, as children playing – mark spaces as theirs. |
